AC Not Cooling? 7 Things to Check Before Calling a Tech

Updated May 21, 2026

If your AC is not cooling, first confirm the thermostat is set to COOL with the fan on AUTO, replace a dirty air filter, check that the outdoor breaker is on, and ensure vents are open and unobstructed. If the outdoor unit hums but does not spin, or you see ice on the lines, turn the system off and call a licensed HVAC technician.

1. Thermostat Settings and Batteries

Verify mode is COOL, not HEAT or FAN ONLY. Set temperature several degrees below room temp. Replace batteries on battery-powered stats. Smart thermostats may need Wi-Fi reconnection after outages — check for error codes in the app.

2. Air Filter

A clogged filter restricts airflow, causing frozen coils and weak cooling. Hold the filter to light — if you cannot see through it, replace it. During Texas summers, check monthly.

3. Breakers and Disconnect Switch

Locate the indoor furnace/air handler breaker and outdoor condenser breaker in your panel. Reset once if tripped — if it trips again, stop and call a pro. Confirm the outdoor disconnect (gray box near the unit) is fully engaged.

4. Vents and Returns

Open all supply vents, even in unused rooms, to balance static pressure. Do not block returns with furniture or rugs. Closed vents in more than one room can trip high-pressure safety switches.

5. Outdoor Condenser

Clear leaves, grass, and debris within two feet. Gently rinse coils with a garden hose (power off first) if caked with dirt. Listen for humming without fan spin — that may indicate a bad capacitor, which is a common same-day repair.

6. Ice on Lines or Indoor Coil

Ice means turn OFF the AC. Likely causes: dirty filter, low refrigerant, or blower failure. Let ice melt completely before a technician pressures the system.

7. When to Call a Professional

Call immediately for burning smells, loud grinding, repeated breaker trips, or no cooling when outdoor temps exceed 95°F with vulnerable occupants at home.
